Hank Watson's Garage Hour - Cars, Trucks, Beers & Guns

It’s Christmastime, so why not grab the punching handle by the blondes and try the Home Depot China Challenge yourself?  …Because the gearheads in your life like what we like, we have ideas:  fine waxes (Zymol), special sips (Gilark Creekwater rye whiskey, Axe & Oak, and 291), good tools (used or new, it’s about the function), obscure watches (make the effort), tint and clear-bra from E.A.S., slot cars, Atari and N64, and the gift of babysitting (so folks can make some time).  Most importantly, shop local and seek something that’s better than expected.

While we’re at it:  How about a fistfight over chablis at the Broadmoor?  How about Subie politics and 4Runner douchebaggery on the Front Range?  Who isn’t two degrees from a Cutlass?  …And why do all the racoons have knives?

Yeah, yeah, it’s been too long.  …Usual Christmastime to-do list is kicking everyone’s ass.  Thankfully, Caleb from EAS in the ‘Springs kicked Hostus Maximus Justin and Gearhead Celebutant Mark’s collective asses back into the studio (over sips at Bristol Brewery), because the Garage Hour is too much candy not to have some.  Gearhead location experimentation ensued, fueled by Axe & Oak’s Pike’s Peak Hillclimb whiskey, 9mm and .22 Magnum, visits from Charlie (who actually commanded an Abrams tank), plus movies Caleb’s got to watch (or he’ll die).

What’s more to like:  the F1 parade and ear-plugging weenies, tank movies, Saturday night coolers and van parties, a Glock 43 and an S&W with a billion rounds in the mag, plus Frank Rizzo, Saul Rosenberg and the Egyptian Magician.

Okay, busy boy does gearhead goodness:  good pipes on slushbox BR-Zs (awww), Volvo households and 244s (turbo!), car racism and Tiptronic, automatic trannies for off-road effect, avoiding Chinese tires, new-car reality versus the electric car market and the “Cold Snap Sprint” (home), the 80-40 ice fog freakout, REI (bad) versus four-wheeling (good), and the big Louisiana fog crash (holy shed).

More:  discretion versus valor (pull off and have a burrito), pilots versus shrooms (and 83 counts of attempted murder for Captain Stupid), UFC refuses to learn from Bud Light’s fail, and a big Garage Hour R.I.P. to excellent weirdos Richard Mull (“Bull” from Night Court) and Matthew Perry from Friends (don’t do drugs then hit the hot tub).  …Sounds from Peter Gunn, Vibravoid, God Lives Underwater, and thoughts about sounds from Iron Maiden.

Somuchworktodo…. Sorry about the untimely uploads, but the Gearhead Consultancy’s plate doth overfloweth.  Now, about some good talk:  What happens when a thunderstorm bombs the garage, and what’s the deal when your meat has been froen instead of hitting the ‘fridge fresh?  4Runner trans mounts (and squishy torque specs), stupid Jeepers winning stupid prizes (or horse-tranqed beggars - hey, it’s not MY wedding), secret Pioneer head units, JKs with V8s, electric Jeeps with rebates, new cars suffering a case of the old elbows, stolen design cues, and tie-downs and ratchet straps (because if it’s on the side of the road, it’s not on your load).

Also, Home Depot versus Harbor Freight, half-digested Citroens, Zach’s elk summer sausage, and Electric Wizard, Living Color, Propellerheads and Electronic Excursions in High-Fi.

When we’re not stripping bolts on Warn hubs and trans mounts, the gearhead goons have a good little bit of info for you on using the right fastener (and not the “it fits” rule employed by the Walkin’ Dude…).  There’s also news on robot-controlled semis being permitted on more roads (we’re about two steps from “Maximum Overdrive”, kids), the Goolag steering hapless Jeep owners off cliffs and creeks (buy a map), electric cars being powered by diesel (when unicorn farts are in short supply), and the wisdom of avoiding yuge chunks of Jersey barrier while commuting the company coche (because ashtray).

Then again:  wolves (not) in Colorado, wasted capital on fake green agendi, the Densh…. Denmarkers…. people of Daneland… giving up on environmentally friendly LEGOs, plus Goblin, Blur, Puny, Fatso, FNM, Mastodon, Faktor, Dekoder, Straits and AIC.

We warned you - the Gearhead Consultancy is all about paying attention (because geek!), and this uberule applies to home, self, car, property and Sanctum Garagium.  If you don’t want your goods to get grabbed, watch your back when you park the Aston (or whatever you roll) in the car hole, because with all the crime exploding across America, someone might be watching you.  The market is there for thieves - don’t be their meat.

There’s more: lost D-rings, lost hitches and lost F-35s, hacked ships and hacked warplanes (yikes?), pawn shops and battery slop, Teslas running over junk and unions running over members, JF Summit, illegal Canadia, the thumb on the scale, plus Fu Manchu, High on Fire, Sleep, Matt Pike and Dragonaut, Herbalizer, Alice in Chains and Die Krupps.

Herman, Gold Camp, Mt. Baldy - and thoughts on truck bags (gear for a day), mine access, universal keys, lost D-rings, and not ‘froading alone.

As always, there’s a lot more:  bags on roofs and tents on trucks, too much pressure washing and oil consumption, not enough Eddyline and Coors Banquest, Fred and Rudy (dogs), Cujo (dog name), Capt. Surly and Dani (people), and The Toadies and Presidents of the United States of America (bands).

Drive over the lawn, bust down the fence, toss the barricade in the ditch, ‘froad the road less travelled, or just go the “wrong” way - it’s not the climate that’s going to ruin your day, it’s the fire started by bad behavior (intentional or incompetent) storming around the corner of your neighbor’s bungalow that you need to flee.  Lots of bad stuff happened in the Maui firestorm, but good lessons are never too early to be learned, and the Gearhead Consultancy is here to help - turns out your natural distrust of government, bureaucrats, elected libtards and watermelon environmentalists is well placed.

Yes, you’re correct - it’s a little soon for this chat - but it’s never too soon to be prepared for the next one, and not knowing when that is, let’s take this opportunity to toughen up and avoid a repeat.  Because, in the end, your survival is your business.

...Got a lot of respect for Darwin’s capability to wipe out bad batches of genes from the people stew that is humanity, but let’s stop making kids in hot cars take the brunt of it.  Meanwhile, back at the garage, how about some gearhead civil disobedience?  You’re no pepperoni-armed hipster antifa weenie, so keep it non-destrictive like MLK Jr. said we should.  Plate cams, robot cars and bad bureaucracy are a great place to start: unplug something; cover something; aim something at a wall; drop a traffic cone in front of something - show how bad or stupid or insidious something is without destroying it.

More goodness:  Funyons versus coffee, Hillary’s SoCal fail (less rain than January), IRS agents with guns, new homes on old mines (wicked ultra KAPOW, folks), Bud versus Busch, Maui’s firebug problem, electric busses go bankrupt because they only do politics, and another electric F-150 function flop.

Join the Garage Hour goons and say “Hail No!” to your cars and trucks looking like you left them parked at the receiving end of a driving range.  Jus because it’s summer and you live in a town that’s prone to the big icy agony-inducing airborne projectiles known as HAIL doesn’t mean you have to live with dents and dings and the sneering sideways glances from your dentless neighbors.  We’ve got ideas and solutions: homemade, inexpensive, effective, available, inflatable, hand-me-down and hard to assemble.  Also, this episode’s got OE recalls (F-150 e-brakes engaging when they feel like it), Porsche insulting Christianity but pretending days of editing was an “error”, the E.P.A. approving additives for gas that cause cancer in EVERYTHING (government isn’t on your side), and why Ohio and Indiana letting HAL 9000 drive their semis.

...And sorry about the delayed upload - too much to-doing in Earning a Livingland.

More:  Rev. Heat versus Liberace, barn haters, baloney sandwiches, and gambling with music (like Horton Heat, A.F.I., Ministry, Wellwater Conspiracy, Metallica, Sugar Ray, Living Colour, Luscious Jackson and 16-Volt).

The Garage Hour goons got our fancy canyon carving nasties a little dirty on a fuuuuuun run over Independence Pass (lousy stupid mountain cloudbursts), so it’s time for car cleaning.  How about some technique you might not know from the detailing experts (referring to us - hilarious)?

Here’s the what: keeping metal cool and wet, cold water versus glass, pre-washing, two buckets (and two sponges?), detailing with detailer, thumbnail tricks, clar bars, cotton and microfiber towels, car-care chemicals, wheel brushes, tool prep, hang-drying, air and water drying, specialized cleaners for special surfaces, and using good products like Mother’s, Griot’s and E.C.P. ( as well as their detail guides).

More: Worschestirerer sauce, fresh O.J. (now that he’s out of prison), plus Truckfighters, Quicksilver Loom, Yes, Faust & Shortee, Soundgarden, Tomohawk, and Massive Attack.

What else...  Shepherdlike coyotesque dogbjects, disc versus drums, Bradley tarps, good grease, e-people and CO2 haters versus trees and shade, bolt sorting, coolant hoarding and a jack named tranny.

Don’t get us wrong - if people drove as well as flying cars deserved, the Garage Hour goons would be all about Jetsoning to the hardware store for a 2x4, but as long as geeks like us can’t get straight answers about liability and licensing and small details like power provison, controls sans computer, and when we can fly our car up a canyon like Clint in “Firefox”, we’ll stick with the backyard helicopter, thank you.  ...Just like electric cars, until said thing can stand on its own two, it’s just words.

More to love: rock and roll from Dog Fashion Disco, Contagion, Man or Astroman, Hum, Dandelion and Die Krupps, fire and lots of it, “Demolition Man” robot-car self-drive shenannigans, with an intro by some misshapen monsters from Mars.

Is Bubba Wallace the new Danica Patrick?  Way to ruin what little credibility you had left, schmuck.  We prefer Jim Brown - R.I.P., big guy.  We also prefer Richard Jewell (speaking of R.I.P.), whom this episode somehow commingles with the Unabomber (who will probably not be resting peacefully, if you catch our drift).  Then it’s all experts and flying SFPD patrol cars and NYC suing carmakers who don’t make cars that can survive the city’s criminals, plus not blowing people up.

Don’t worry, there’s more, like a complete “16 Volt” background track, journalists behaving badly, “Escape from New York”, “Invasion USA”, Kurt Russell, Chuck Norris, Lee Van Cleef, Mac 10s, and more corruption in Quid Pro Joe’s basement.

Geeks don’t want politicians to take away their freedom to roam, nor ruin their gearhead life (geek powa!), and the skill-set guys (aka: geeks) won’t let snap-lift oversteer derail an otherwise enjoyable 120mph joyride in the 3-Series daddy just bought ‘em.  Meanwhile, back at the garadtch, we dipped our toes in a collection of indestructibility for your driveway (this topic will return - the schwartz says so), as well as vacuum wiring, “initial” build quality, tranny fluid, Floriditis, and technology is still not on our side.

It’s not all ball bearings nowadays: independent beermakers like Appalachian Mountain go rogue, drones with artificial intelligence go rogue, carmakers’ data-capture goes rogue, and Wyoming goes rogue to protect its taxpayers.  Special appearances by Carl Sagan, Mission Creep, Orbital, Elmer Bernstein, Meat Beat Manifesto, Genesis and the NY Post...

That’s a spicy meatball - everything from killer whales eating your rudder (still not sure of their MO) to godless commies dredging up sunken WW2 wrecks for scrap, this episode’s got it.  ...It’s all gearhead, though - don’t ‘fraid dat.  On top of the usual suspects, however, we’ve piled plumbing parts, protecting your peep, new steekers, old lamp oil, Curtis Sliwa and a Marine in New Yawk City, and the plum amber at Trinity.

Now, go out in the world and make something - we made some God Lives Underwater (come through your speakers), Shark Bite (fittings fix some pipes), new Garage Hour vinyl (stick to your jalopy), with honorable mentions for White Gladis and John Cleese.

When the gearheads get enthusiastic, the geeks get going:  the new-car connectivity albatross and its threat to AM (as well as your seat heaters), why new cars and their general state of suck is making a mess of the used-car market, and some F!ed up fun from Kalifornistan, where the police can’t chase you and the earth is swallowing up off-roaders.  Then it’s turbos, bugeye WRXs, EVCs, own-versus-rent and right-to-repair, and a breakdown of the better James Bonds (and why Remington Steele’s/Pierce Brosnahanan’s “November Man” could have been perfect).

More for you:  DJ Contact (w/ DJ Cookie Dough), Amon Tobin (with a mashup), Air (#becauseweird), and Source Direct (#becausetractor).  Also, Umberto from GRC, The Uhhs, jerkles and unicorn skulls.

Holy carp, if you ever may use a gun to protect your person, people or property, this is an episode for you.  We dug into a great interview of a gent who came out on top during a parking lot throwdown with an armed criminal.  Colion Noir did a good job and let the winner (hey, he’s not dead) talk about it: the boon of practice (practice, practice...), the bane of tactical doodads, why round-limits will get you killed, big guns versus small, physical wellbeing and the right clothes, situational awareness, how you’ll feel and what to do and say afterwards, and why you carry with a pew in the pipe (because “Carrying With a Round in the Chamber Saved My Life”).

There’s a lot more here, and every ounce is worth a shooter’s time: smart meet-ups, lawyers for shut the f@€& up, don’t be fat, plus Contagion, NIN, Deftones, Whorgasm, Chainsaws & Children, Alien Faktor and Steril.

Thoughts from the gearhead planet...  Sticky tires and Bilstein PSS9s, Doc’s Elise and Ryan’s Alpina, pie-faced ditzes and Porsche mugs, Teslas trying to burn down mid-race, BMWs and their airbags, electric STis won’t hunt (or go hillclimbing, or all day), new and used car prices up about 20% since Sniffy Joe got into office (and the electric-car price distortion), Lamborghini’s slightly challenging (and airborne) Pike’s Peak record attempt, and a few thoughts on how microplastics might be a secondary problem to the overall plastic recycling fraud.  Also, other stuff.

Also also, safety should not depricate freedom, and dumb folks don’t know they are.  More tastiness:  Velvet Acid Christ, Steril, Korn, Zombie, Skrew, Nation of Fear, Nick Cave, 16 Volt and Sugar Ray.

Do you want alien archeologists to brand Earth the T-shirt and cardboard planet?  We neither, so let’s get to work quelling the free-farce zone built upon by bumper stickers, bad governance, idiot officials and ideology that can’t get past its first foot forward.  Expand your inputs (think from the firehose) - AM is a part of unexpected reality, and that’s good.  Challenge the bubble - Car & Driver is taking down the fake figures supporting e-car efficiency.  Ridicule bureaucrats when they say things that don’t make sense - racist roads and electric tanks?  ...And call out corruption when you see it - Sniffy Joe’s White House basement just hired Ford’s China-funded battery lobbyist.  WT capital F?

More to love (perhaps it’s time for a diet): cyborgs, hard-boiled eggs, New Jersey-level paranoid, electric NASCAR and quiet Thunderboats, are catalytic thefts being buoyed by the skidplate industry, plus Folk Implosion, Man or Astroman, Mastodon, Cujo, Beck, DJ Shadow, Gruntruck and Bio-Mechanical Degeneration.

You’re the geek, so you understand the importance of the Second Amendment (probably to the point of being obnoxious).  Good - we too.  This piece gathers the bits, including the massive growth of ownership, all the new (and novel) firearms owners, the importance of training - don’t buy 10 guns, buy one and ten boxes of bullets.  ...Or maybe 100.  Then the Gearhead Consultancy flubs the Constitution (we should all grab a copy and bone up), but saves the day with background on bad laws from Washington state (a rifle ban?) and bad ideas from idiots (“smart” guns)...

What’s more: Atomic Bitchwax, Southern Culture, Failure, Goatsnake, For Love Not Lisa, Josh Wink, Corrosion, Bowie, and Al King with Stevie Ray.  Also, Legos for kids and adults, tyrannosaurus skeletons for the living room, T-90s for truck stops, bacteria for everyone, good PR for exploding billions, beers for Americans, and tranny fluid for pinkos.

So much good stuff:  why Johnny Cab is planning to kill you, why nobody wants electric cars, why gov’t choices aren’t, why electric cars are a social contagion too, why gov’t action is an inverse penalty, why more CO2 is a good thing, why 60% of new cars can never be electric, why artificial intelligence isn’t, and why robot cars are causing new and innovative traffic jams.

We’re busy building things and fixing stuff, so have a rundown:

- used-car prices gone crazy (again), w/ financial pressures, interest and inflation hikes, shortages of cars/parts/money

- misbegotten gov’t overreactions making the aforementioned worse

- manufacturer costs inflated by electric car unicorn farts

- rules for paying to attention to used-car prices (follow what you know)

- some side history on automakers’ ongoing fruitless efforts to kill AM radio

More to live for: hooray for Cubans pulling a McGuyver (the old one, not the silly new version) on Communism, cottonwood versus aspen, Duesenbergs, Southern Culture on the Skids, Masters of Reality, Monolord, God Lives Underwater, High On Fire, Deadbolt and Fatso Jetson, plus Stephen King’s evil basement and upcoming Found On Road Awsomeness.

While we’re at it:  bread is yummy, hot-boxing ruins resale, killing whales and birds, false electric-car advertising, snow in L.A. because it’s winter, VW takes the carjackers’ side, Ford isn’t on yours, and beer acting weird at 13,000ft.

Invent a better mousetrap and they'll beat a path to your door, or, in the case of the gearheads at the Garage Hour, do an episode full of fun homeownery crap and everyone will want more.  ...Because we'd been planning to spend an hour with formerly Silent Sean (head in the bag, mind in the gutter) tuning up the deadbolts at Castle de Sack, what better time to capture some more easy to-dos that'll keep the wolves at bay (now that the stupider people in Colorado have deigned to release an apex predator into our backyards)?

Code pads?  Double-authentication?  House numbers?  Screen doors?  Door braces?  Frangible rounds?  Driveway safety and garage-door security?  Local laws?  Fake rocks?  Safe rooms?  Shatter Guard?  Mail gettin'?  We've got 'em.
